N THE MIDST of historic retail
disruption, 2017 ended with a
bang-an even more robust holiday
than analysts predicted. And in the
background, retail transformation
and the pace of change in the retail industry didn't slow down a bit. Retail
always has been challenging, but it's never
been more complicated, and the new retail model that is emerging taxes the design
industry for retailers and CPGs alike-or at
least it should.
Simply designing a retail store, merchandising or planning a brand rollout/promotion
may not have changed fundamentally, but
multichannel and omnichannel business
models depend on design and merchandising
functions in new ways. Consequently, the job of
designing, planning and merchandising retail has
gained layers and layers, as retail stores begin to
function differently in order to adapt to a mobile,
e-commerce and multifunctional retail world.
Big data, new e-commerce, Fintech and retail
apps are changing the way in which shoppers
interact with both physical and digital retail. Innovations that blend together those worlds call on
design and merchandising in order to simplify and
improve shopper experience. New functionality, including ship-from-store and cashier-free retailing,
