west Region Digital Experience
Creative Design Leader, Gensler
In our digitally saturated lives, everyone
is craving a "tech-free" world, or at least
one that appears to be that way. While we
romanticize the chance to be off the grid-
away from our screens and the need to
always be "on"-we have, in fact, become
Greg Gallimore
accustomed to the ease, convenience
and access that technology affords us. So, how do retailers
manage these expectations, yet deliver a memorable customer experience? Join retail and technology design leaders
from global design firm Gensler for a provocative discussion.
Explore how technology can be purposeful and unobtrusive
while improving service, facilitating selection and social connection, and best of all instigating fun.

Speakers: Cheryl Durst, Executive Vice President & CEO, IIDA;
Ray Tareghian, Senior Visual
Manager (retired), Burberry

consumers need? And how can design
answer these questions? Join IIDA

Cheryl Durst, and Ray Tareghian, visual
merchandising manager for Burberry for
four decades (now retired), for a fastpaced exchange on the future of design
and retail.

Speaker: Robert Rutledge, Principal, Southwest Design Office
Robert Rutledge
"Stores are failing," "retail has moved
online," "customers want experience
more than merchandise." We're hearing it on an almost daily
basis. "Clicks to bricks" is changing the retail landscape,
while traditional malls and anchor tenants seem to disappear regularly. Yet, 91 percent of sales still take place in
stores, and it appears that they will be with us for at least
another generation. How do you develop a store or a store
program today given the sea changes that have taken place
in the retail market recently? What ideas at the leading edge
of retail should we be paying attention to? How do you plan
and design a store that is relevant to changed customer
expectations today? How are the challenges for traditional
retailers different from the digitally native vertically integrated (or DNVI) brands? Join veteran retail designer and
creative director Robert Rutledge for a survey of the best
practices in today's physical stores and his predictions on
best practices for cutting edge retailers today-and what's "in
store" for stores down the road.

Innovate to Elevate: Delivering
Growth through ShopperCentric Category Management

Mission-Driven Design: Connecting Your
Customer to Your Social Mission
11 a.m.-11:50 a.m.
Speakers: Christian Soares, Principal, Field
Paoli Architects; Katie Handy, Senior Associate,
Field Paoli Architects; Gabrielle Rosi, Senior
Design Coordinator, Whole Foods Market; Kelsey
Witherow, Founder, DOUGHP
Consumers want to be supporters, enablers and champions of a shared mission. Edelman's "Earned Brand 2016
Global Results" report said: 62 percent will not buy if a brand
fails to meet societal obligations. Sixty percent believe doing
good should be a foundational element of the brand. Fifty-five
percent believe brands are in a position to do more to solve
societal ills than the government. Brands are integrating their
mission into their website, social media campaigns, advertising and special events, but there is another outlet, which
is a huge opportunity to connect with customers. The store
experience can develop customer's engagement and participation in your mission, inspiring them to share and creating
memorable experiences that deepen their alignment with
your brand. After all, customers give their fullest attention
and open heart to your brand when shopping in store.

Speaker: Mark Roberti, Founder
& Editor, RFID Journal
Radio frequency identification (RFID)
Mark Roberti
has been around for years, but it is starting to take off in retail, particularly apparel.
With the tipping point nearing, it is critical for store designers
to understand how the basics of how RFID works, how it will be
integrated into store fixtures and how it can be used to transform the in-store experience. During this session, you will learn
what you need to know to prepare for the coming RFID wave.
Generation Z & the Origins
of Retail
1:30 p.m.-1:50 p.m.
Speaker: Matthew McNerney,
Experience Director & Strategist,
Eight Inc.
Matthew McNerney
If you want to know how to sell to the
newest generation of customers, there's a
lot to learn from the original sales strategies of your greatgreat grandmother's retail experiences. While the technology
has radically changed, the values of community, local goods
and exceptional customer service resonate with Gen Z more
than any other demographic. Learn about how looking to the
past can provide profound insights into unlocking the potential of retail in the future.
