CITY OF HISTORY
FROM THE GOLD RUSH
TO WINE COUNTRY,
PETALUMA CONTINUES
TO MAKE ITS MARK.
WELCOME!
BE ENCHANTED BY CHARMING PETALUMA.
IN 1833, when General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo
first surveyed the verdant Petaluma Valley, he described the area as "a land of pure enchantment."
General Vallejo wasn't the only one to recognize
Petaluma's bounty. Lured by the temperate climate,
fertile soil, and abundant water, settlers from across
the country and the world began populating the
valley. They built farms, established businesses, and
developed a communal spirit of mutual support. The
same welcoming attitude still permeates Petaluma
as it has evolved into one of Northern California's
premier destinations.
The grand ironfront buildings that line Petaluma
Boulevard recall the city's days as the "World's Egg
Basket." The Petaluma River that once channeled
timber, grain, livestock, dairy, and produce to the
Gold Rush markets in San Francisco now hosts
flotillas of weekend kayakers and paddleboarders.
The local grid of charming streets, historic
homes, and brick-walled alleys is best experienced
on foot, so you can fully savor the stylish boutiques,
rustic antique stores, and hip bistros serving dishes
made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients.
Petaluma is also dedicated to a sustainable future
- a goal that its government, businesses, and residents have taken action to achieve. A cutting-edge
wastewater recycling facility, water conservation
programs, a ban on polystyrene foam containers, and
citywide LED lighting conversions are just a few of
the programs already in place.
With its legendary warmth, casual friendliness,
and abundant charm, Petaluma serves as the gateway to the best of Sonoma County and beyond.
We hope that just like General Vallejo 185 years
ago, you'll find Petaluma to be an enchanting
destination.

For nearly two centuries, Petaluma has
played a large part in
shaping a region and a
state. The Gold Rush?
The city supplied the
booming populations
of San Francisco and
Oakland. The egg incubator? It was invented
here. Wine Country? It
starts in P-town.
