Whether you are looking for a beautifully
crafted quilt or hoping to create one
yourself, Amish owned quilt and fabric
shops around the county are worth a
stop. Browse hand-sewn blankets at
Rhiel's Quilts & Crafts, Hannah's Quilts,
or Fisher's Handmade Quilts. You can
learn about the craft from the makers
themselves.

For an authentic farm tour, try the
Old Windmill Farm. Here the family
graciously opens their farm to guests
for a look into the Amish lifestyle. On
their one-hour guided tour, visitors
can participate in the daily chores like
feeding a calf, gathering eggs, milking
the cows and more - making this a
great hands-on experience!

If you are more of a foodie, make sure to
stop for freshly-picked produce. Amish
families have roadside stands that can
be found around almost every corner
on the backroads, as well as farmers
markets throughout the county.

Road Etiquette
Safely Driving around Buggies
While driving the back roads of
Lancaster County, you'll share the road
with bicyclists, Amish folks on scooters,
and of course, horse and buggies.
You may be asking "what's the proper
etiquette for driving on the road with
buggies?" Here's what to do.

Approach & pass buggies slowly.
When it's safe to pass, make sure
your vehicle is least 20 feet in front of
the horse before you get back in the
travel lane.

No horns please!
Horses can be spooked easily,
especially by loud noises like car horns.

Leave plenty of room.
While driving, be sure to give the
buggy space by not following too
closely. It's also kind to allow a little
more room between you and the
buggy while stopped, as buggies tend
to roll back a few feet after stopping.

Mud sales
Beginning in late February, Mud Sales
are annual auctions where the "English"
and the Amish bid side-by-side on
all sorts of things - from quilts, crafts
and furniture to lawn equipment and
shrubbery, even a kitchen sink! As you
browse through these events, you'll
see many Amish folks, and can sample
tasty, homemade, authentic Lancaster
goodies. If you plan to attend don't
forget your boots! The spring thaw
makes the ground quite soft (hence the
name).

Since the Amish are a private group of
people, living heritage attractions like
The Amish Village, Amish Experience,
and Amish Farm and House offer guests
the chance to learn about this lifestyle
through their farms. Both places have
created guided and self-guided tours
that teach visitors about the Amish as
they explore the farmhouses, one-room
schoolhouses, and barns.
While visiting, stop by and say hi to
the farm animals or take a ride on
a traditional Amish scooter. You'll
come away with new knowledge and
appreciation of this culture.

Observe their driving habits.
Horse and buggies will drive as
close to the right side of the road as
possible, but move towards the center
when making a left-hand turn. Many
buggies have turn signals, or the driver
will use hand gestures to signal.

Keep an eye out
for horses at night.
Buggies are illuminated at night,
however, the horse may be dark and
hard to see.
