EFA DESIGN SHOWCASE
SKILLED NURSING/MEMORY CARE

Salemtowne Retirement Community WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.

Salemtowne Retirement Community is a 40-year-old nonprofit
continuing care community with
its roots in the Moravian church.
Home to more than 325 residents, most facilities were built 20
or more years ago; many were
outdated and not readily adaptable
to the expectations and needs of
current and future residents. In a
major strategic planning/re-evaluation process, partly spurred by the
donation of a large parcel of land,
Salemtowne interviewed more than
100 individuals, including residents
and staff, community leaders, and
local health services providers. An
opportunity was found to develop
a new healthcare center providing
services for three distinct populations: skilled nursing, memory
care, and rehab therapy.
The healthcare center will open
with 120 rooms mixed between
the three populations, with growth
capacity to160. Households of 20
private rooms each connect to a
central core containing seating areas and common spaces not found
in households; each household
has access to courtyards. Both the

exterior and interior designs draw
from an up-to-date interpretation
of the Moravian values and traditions at the heart of Salemtowne-
simplicity, welcome and hospitality,
authenticity, community, craftsmanship.
The overall design goal was to
create space that anyone-resident,
family member, guest, staff-will
enjoy, and to focus on advancing
quality of life both aesthetically and
operationally. Natural light floods
the building and each resident has
ample, safe access to the outdoors.
Separate entrances for long-term
care (LTC) versus short-stay rehab
minimize confusion with wayfinding. Meals in LTC and memory care
households are cooked to order,
while rehab has room-service options-all reflected in the kitchen
and dining area design.
