MEMORY CARE NAOOMI KUROZUMI Something to talk about Sayanomoto Clinic in Saga, Japan, specializes in treating patients with dementia. When approaching the design of the 7,437-square-foot clinic, architecture firm Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop (Tokyo) sought to create an environment where patients didn't just receive care, but families and patients could learn more about living with the condition. A common learning space inside the clinic features a 98-foot-long bookshelf with pictorial books meant to inspire discussion. The space overlooks an outdoor garden, which uses local flora to recreate the area's scenery of rice fields and mountains. The project garnered attention from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), earning a 2015 IIDA Global Excellence Award in the healthcare category.
