EFA DESIGN SHOWCASE
MEMORY CARE

Brookdale Williamsburg Memory Care Unit WILLIAMSBURG, VA.
Submitted by: ESa (Earl Swensson Associates) NASHVILLE
Brookdale Williamsburg, formerly
Chambrel at Williamsburg, is located
in historic Williamsburg, Va. The open
floor plan of the memory care unit allows
residents to engage in numerous activities
that promote independence and encourage individual interests and talents, while
also giving the staff ease of visibility. A
sophisticated design and color palette of
soft warm neutrals of sage, green, and blue
with accents of rust welcome residents. The
attention to detail in the custom millwork,
custom carpet, decorative lighting, and art
images of local photography, along with
selected fabrics and furniture, create many
layers of interest and emulate the character
of Williamsburg.
Residents have their own private rooms
and bathrooms. They are encouraged to join
others in the community spaces or enjoy
fresh air and flower planting opportunities
in the gated courtyard. Every indoor common area/gathering space has visibility of at
least one of the two separate courtyards.
More than seven life skills stations are
located throughout the memory care center.
These programmed areas are designed to
help residents regain or retain life skills such
as gardening, parenting/baby-nurturing,
cooking, doing laundry, listening to music,
and other activities that help the brain to
connect in familiar ways. At the center of
activity is an open, family-style kitchen,
which acts as a kitchen life skills station and
nourishment station. The adjacent, elegant
dining area provides space for group dining.
The similarly designed activity area offers
a place to enjoy group activities like games,
movies and crafts, puzzles, and music (including a digital piano).
