choice in living areas, from
quiet reflective spaces
to active spaces where
residents can socialize
and engage in group
activities. Flexible spaces
that can easily be adapted
by residents for different
activities also provide
choice and can help foster a
sense of both independence
and community.

Describe your business in
one sentence.
CR Goodman Associates, a
full-service architecture and
interior design firm certified
as a woman-owned small
business, is comprised
of a team of individuals
who are compassionate
about the design of senior
living communities and
all elements along the
continuum of care that touch
the lives of seniors.
What's one major design
or care delivery trend
that's shaping your work
today? And how so?
We are seeing an increased
need for supportive
memory care environments.
In all aspects of senior
environments, from
independent living to
assisted living and
dedicated memory care
neighborhoods, there
is a requirement for the

design to support cognitive
ability. In our firm, we
talk about designing for
capability rather than
designing for disability.
Simple things like quality
lighting, appropriate use
of color and contrast, and
an orderly layout of space
can make a difference.
It is our responsibility as
designers to assure that

the spaces we create will
allow the residents to be
as independent as possible
for as long as possible.
We take this responsibility
seriously.
How does your firm
answer industry goals
for achieving a sense of
community and creating
homelike environments
for seniors?
The key to providing a
supportive, communitybased, homelike
environment is choice.
It is important for senior
environments to provide
choices for their residents.
This includes choice in
dining options, including
areas for formal vs. informal
dining with menu options
to correlate. It also includes

How do you involve
residents to ensure their
voices are heard in the
design process?
We believe in a multidisciplinary approach to
design. It is critical that
all project stakeholders
take part in the design
process. This includes
the leadership, staff, and
residents. Communication
is key. We engage the entire
community through surveys
and town hall meetings so
that everyone's voice can
be heard and they can all
be engaged in the design
process. It is important that
everyone has an opportunity
to help shape the goals and
vision of the project. In this
way, the entire community
can feel ownership in the
outcome because they
played a role in it.
