EFA DESIGN SHOWCASE
CONTINUING CARE RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

Pisgah Valley Retirement Community CANDLER, N.C.
Submitted by: SFCS Architects CHARLOTTE, N.C.
Situated in the serene countryside
near Asheville, N.C., Pisgah Valley
Retirement Community has been
serving its neighbors since 1975.
This fall, construction will begin on
46 "mountain modern" apartments
and a progressive Town Center
that will become the heart of the
community.
Special care in the design
emphasizes the connection to nature.
Spectacular views of the Pisgah
Mountains are maximized through
continuous windows at the Town
Center and through the innovative
decentralized layout of the
apartments. The Town Center roof
slopes down towards the roof garden,
showcasing the rooftop plantings.
This symbolically transforms the
Town Center into an artificial foothill
of the mountains beyond.
With the Town Center's compact
footprint, flexible spaces facilitate
a multitude of uses. Moveable
partitions at the multipurpose room
allow large events to expand into
the lobby. Sliding pocket doors at
the private dining room can close
for small gatherings. This open-plan
concept still includes quiet, more
intimate areas for residents to rest
and relax.
Exterior stone wing walls
continue inside to create a

meaningful indoor/outdoor
connection. These wing walls are the
spatial organizer of the project, and
create spaces for fireplaces, storage,
doors, and structural members. This
significantly declutters the floor plan
to create a sleek, clean look.
The roof garden provides outdoor
amenity space with bocce ball,
outdoor dining, and walking paths.
The material palette of wood and
stone reinterprets local vernacular
by providing a strong sense of
home without compromising
Pisgah Valley's appeal to the next
generation of seniors.
