Thoma-Holec Design
is a specialized interior
design firm with expertise
creating award-winning
living environments that
incorporate local influence
and current trends with the
elements and amenities
that support the evolving
lifestyle and personal needs
of senior living residents.

What's one major design
or care delivery trend
that's shaping your work
today? And how so?
There are several design
trends gaining ground,
but the two that stand out
for us include creating
flexible amenity areas for
multipurpose use, and
spaces that will attract the
public and intergenerational
interaction. Examples include:

repurposing private dining
rooms into wine cellars, tea
rooms, and internet cafés;
creating meeting spaces and
amphitheaters for resident
and professional use, lifelong
learning and performance
venues; and, designing dining
areas, market places, or cafés
that are open to the public.
Identifying and addressing
clients' current and future
goals from the outset helps us
plan these spaces now, and
for the future.
What are some challenges
your firm is facing? How
do you overcome those
obstacles?
We look at challenges as
opportunities. One we are
currently anticipating is
the growing decline in new
construction which has
been our primary audience
for quite some time. We
overcome that, and any
challenges we face, by
identifying which of our
services is most relevant to
the marketplace at any given
time, and increase our focus

on educating our audience
to the benefits of those. With
the potential of an overbuilt
senior housing market, we are
prepared and excited about the
opportunity to reposition and
rebrand older communities.
Tell us something surprising
about your company that
people may not know.
Clients are often surprised to
learn that we are a relatively
small design firm. With our
national exposure, national
awards, and volume of work that
we complete, they often assume
we are a much larger company.
Our designers dedicate their
time to each client, making
certain we are responsive and
extremely innovative. We invite
and encourage residents to
share their feedback, and rely
on what we learn to inform our
decision-making process. Clients
are also surprised to learn that
I have a gerontology degree,
which enables us to be very
proficient in the programming
and schematic design process.
