The Village at Luther Ridge, a
SpiriTrust Lutheran retirement community in Chambersburg, Pa., added
a Skilled Care and Rehabilitation
Center to the campus to complete its
continuum of care. Noelker and Hull
Associates Inc. provided architectural and interior design services for
the new 43,205-square-foot, 40-bed
skilled care and rehabilitation center
that is a resident-centered care
model and contains two houses of
15 beds each and a 10-bed house for
short-term rehabilitation.
With a design goal to promote
adaptation to the level of interac-

tion desired by the residents, the
design organizes around designated
areas for resident and staff interactions in an effort to support and
promote dignity and independence,
regardless of physical and cognitive
abilities. Each of the three neighborhoods contain private rooms
and are centered on a social core
with living, dining, activity, and spa
spaces. Larger group activities occur
daily in the living rooms. These
areas promote wellbeing with more
structured activities. Conversation
areas allow for residents who struggle with larger groups to remain engaged and involved through one on
one activity in smaller spaces. The
use of both the large living spaces
and smaller conversation areas is
evident each day as the staff designs
an individualized plan of care for
the residents.
Resident rooms open directly
into the large living spaces to encourage engagement. The rooms are
warm and gracious with comfortable furnishings designed to invite
gathering. Residents are relaxed and
at ease in their households, staff is
connecting with the residents at
levels that are individualized and
person-centered, and family members have expressed their satisfaction with the program.
The facility includes a new
therapy gym that provides both inpatient and outpatient care.
