Fahrney Keedy Home & Village
in Boonsboro, Md., added an
addition to their memory support
center. Noelker and Hull Associates Inc. provided architectural
and interior design services for the
17,618-square-foot memory care
unit that included the renovation
of the existing 12 private rooms
and addition of 18 new private
memory care bedrooms with
European showers. This expanded
the existing room count from 12
to 30 private rooms.
The design goal was to provide

a space that met the needs of
residents with memory care deficits.
Quite often these affected residents
express needs in ways not traditional in our culture. These residents
are affected by dark spaces, often are
pacing and restless, and can be combative. This unit affords amenities
that allow for an ambience that by
its design alone positively affects the
resident's behavior and interaction
with others.
The addition of 18 private rooms
is centered around a central, enclosed, sky-lit atrium conservatory
for a year-round wandering garden
that features "front porches" for
each neighborhood and emulates
a European courtyard building
with interior planters containing resident-safe plantings. The
atrium courtyard area allows for the
outdoor concept to be inside where
the residents can benefit from unfettered access to live plants and bright
outdoor filtered light in a supervised
environment 24/7. These large living
spaces allow for ample room to
wander and pace. It also affords residents who struggle with combativeness to have more homelike spaces
to use when they are experiencing
difficulties.
The project includes spaces such
as shared-dining, private-dining,
and living rooms; country kitchen;
and salon.
