THE TERRACE RESTAURANT
WITH ITS HIGH-TRAFFIC location near the exit to the ZSL
London Zoo, The Terrace Restaurant is typically a bustling
place. Housed in a 1920s-era main building, the restaurant
(or "human feeding enclosure," as the zoo prefers to call it)
was expanded in the 1960s, when a single-story timberframe extension was added to its front. But in recent years,
it became apparent that the venue needed an update and
expansion. Hired to oversee that overhaul was SHH, a
London-based architecture/interior design firm.
SHH associate director and project leader Brendan
Heath said the restaurant's needs included not only more
seating but more options for hosting a growing number of
special events. "Our aim was to create a highly functional,
high-impact space that would add real quality to the visitor
experience and also be able to handle the huge volume of
people coming through on a daily basis," says Heath.

ished the '60s-era addition and replaced it with a threelevel, tiered extension. At the base of that new space is a
double-height, ground-floor dining area whose floor-toceiling glass walls let in lots of light. Located atop that
new main floor is a two-tiered outdoor dining deck that
offers views of the passing parade of zoo patrons, as well
as such nearby attractions as the Penguin Beach.
Heath notes that tearing down the restaurant's
bolted-on timber structure netted one other benefit: it
exposed three of the double-height window arches on
the front of the original building "The old extension had
a flat roof, which meant the arches were half-inside and
half-outside the building," Heath notes. "With the higher
ceiling we created for the new addition, those arches are
visible from the front of the building, which allows them
to serve as a dynamic connecting feature between the
new and the old."
