CHANGES IN STORE
BEFORE MAKING the move to

Boutique Design magazine in 2010,
I spent seven years as managing
editor of a sister publication, VMSD,
which stands for Visual Merchandising and Store Design. While that
acronym never did come trippingly off
my tongue, I did find it an interesting
topic to cover. It was fun exploring the
techniques-some subtle, some not
so much-retail designers employ to
create environments that encourage
shoppers to part with their hardearned loot.
So, when our editorial calendar
for this issue included an opportunity to delve into the growing overlap
and intermingling of retail and hospitality design, I jumped at the chance to
write that feature. And I wasn't disappointed-it is an intriguing trend. My
story, "Role Reversal" (page 46), looks
at two noteworthy blur-the-lines projects: Tom Dixon's pop-up department
store within an abandoned hotel in
London, and Bass Pro Shops' in-house
hotel at its massive new store within
Memphis' famed Pyramid building.
The intersection of hospitality
and other sectors also underlies the
lead item in The Buzz section (page
8). There, we recount how major
components of the Designed Space

trade fair floor are finding new life in
a soon-to-open co-working space in
central Florida.
But wait, there's more: Another
border-busting concept is The Assemblage, a combined co-working/hotel
concept by Meyer Davis Studio that's
part of the "New in New York" feature
that starts on page 20. The four projects in that package, in turn, will be
explored in depth at a panel discussion
that will kick off this year's BDNY.
Speaking of that event, highlights of
what's on tap during next month's sixth
iteration of our ever-growing show are
outlined in the preview on page 54. After
that, we offer up a sneak preview of the
groundbreaking FF&E that will be on
display at the trade fair in the product
showroom that starts on page 60.
