Broad project, including making sure that she created a cohesive experience within a property that consists of a restored,
19-key Victorian inn that's connected by a central elevator to
a new wing with eight additional rooms, and balancing a
design ethos that mixes must-have features for today's luxury
travelers with a true-to-Nantucket vibe.
To meld the existing building with the new, Reider worked
closely with locally based Emeritus Development on a variety
of architectural issues. Among them were reconfiguring
several rooms that lacked private baths to include that
amenity and finding ways to make sure the two wings shared
as many architectural details and finishes as possible.
For the hotel's interiors, Reider opted for a white-on-white
color scheme accented with bold pops of color. Layered onto
that background are a variety of materials that Reider says
create an authentic sense of place, including seagrass rugs,
linen fabrics, weathered oak, glass light fixtures and lots and
lots of white lacquer and resin. "Those elements all work
together to create a unified look that is both natural and
modern," says Reider.
Speaking of modern, serving as the visual focal points in each
of the rooms are large-scale, abstract acrylic-on-wood paintings
by Boston artist Trevor Watson that Reider commissioned specifically for the hotel. "I came across Trevor's work at a studio in the
building that houses my business in Boston and was immediately
drawn to it," says Reider. "He has a wonderful sense of color, and
the acrylic that is poured on top of the paintings is reminiscent of
water, which, I thought, was perfect for Nantucket."
Just about everything in the guest rooms references some
aspect of the hotel's setting. Reider keeps the locavore feel
flowing throughout the property by focusing on a neutral
palette and a carefully curated materials list. The flexibility of
these fundamentals works as well in setting a mood of easy
intimacy in the guest rooms as it does in shaping interactive
and multi-functional public spaces where guests can kick back
after a day spent exploring Nantucket's fabled cobblestone
