WhAt ChANGeS hAVe OCCuRReD
At YOuR FIRM SINCe YOu WeRe NAMeD tO the b18?

Growth! We've hired four more team members in addition to our original
three. As a result, we moved into a new office in downtown Brooklyn to
accommodate the growing JSE team and material library.

The just-added namesake spa at the Six Senses Zil Pasyon luxury resort in
the Seychelles makes one of the "boulder" design statements seen
anywhere. The company's in-house architecture and design team worked
with Richard Hywel Evans, founder and director of London-based Studio
RHE, to create the venue's aesthetic, which references the private island's
landscape of rocks and granitic boulders, along with splashes of the jungle.
"At Six Senses Zil Pasyon we felt that nature was so dramatic that we could
not tame it, so instead we wanted nature to tame us," says Anna Bjurstam, vice
president of Bangkok-based Six Senses Spas. "We looked at how nature could
guide us in our design, and consequently we have treatment villas situated
between rocks, on top of rocks and floating above the ocean."
Located on a hilltop, the spa's reception area houses a small shop, along
with manicure and pedicure stations. A circular, open-air space leads to
separate changing areas for both sexes. From there, guests head to the treatment villas. Three of them are located adjacent to the spa, while five doubletreatment villas are nestled among granitic rocks. Designed for minimal
intrusion on the landscape, the villas are linked with lightweight timber
steps and rope bridges and use fabric sails to create shaded spaces.
Bjurstam adds that even the complex's yoga pavilion and wet area are
outside. They are built on top of the rocks amongst lush foliage, and the
infinity-edge pool offers expansive sea views.

WhAt MAJOR ChANGeS hAVe YOu SeeN IN the DeSIGN FIeLD SINCe
beING NAMeD tO the b18?

Two major things: First, I've seen a growing demand for mixed design elements in
interiors. Clients are looking for a blend of old and new, traditional and modern,
clean and textural and different metal combinations. The mix of these elements
has allowed our team to create beautiful interiors that will withstand the test
of time. Second, I've seen a larger emphasis on going green. Using sustainable
materials has been important to almost all my recent clients. Now more than
ever, clients want to invest in materials and systems that have less of an impact
on the environment, that they can be proud of and that look beautiful.
hOW DID beCOMING PARt OF the b18 IMPACt YOuR CAReeR?

It increased our exposure to higher-end, luxury projects and clientele and put
JSE Design on the map for high-end luxury residential and hospitality design.
WhAt ARe YOu WORKING ON NOW?

All of the public spaces of a boutique residential building in Brooklyn
(shown); three homes on Long Island, New York; and four apartments and a
large lobby renovation in Manhattan.
