Foussias' advice for making that happen?
Integrate a good practice check-list and then
design a beautiful room or suite that addresses
those elements-such as grab bars, multiple
height clothing storage or a shower bench-
in ways that work with the design narrative. "The hotel suite we have designed is
intended to function with improved accessibility, and without the clichés we usually find in
such rooms," he says.
One unique feature in the suite includes
a lowered height clothing rack which can be
easily reached while seated in a mobility device.
Another is the bottom drawer of the wardrobe
area which can be rolled out to use as a stool,
or to provide more flexible storage options.
Textured wood and brass-detailed grab bars
are a beautiful departure from the industry
standard of the 30-plus-year-old design of
most hardware. A bench in the shower can be
folded against the wall if not needed or used as
a shower caddy to hold toiletries. Illuminated
robe hooks at varying heights allow all guests
to hang up bathrobes, but also provide convenient "hangers" to allow shirts, dresses and suits
to steam out.
And, one of the most interesting design
challenges is to bridge the gap between code
requirements for accessibility and what makes
a beautifully designed space for all. Foussias points out that in context of accessibility,
designers usually only know what the code tells
them as a minimum. "Ideally, try to get input
from diverse users to find out what they actually
need, as opposed to a personal attempt to figure
it out, and try to create design tools that also
help anticipate needs," advises Klimitz.
Klimitz stresses that there's still a lot of
groundwork to be done to support advances in
the industry. "Beautiful and accessible design
is happening out there, but it would be great
to see more of it showcased in the hospitality
industry. The media and hospitality organizations could use their platforms to encourage
designers to raise the bar through competitions or resources that highlight accessible and
universal design. Hotels that are set to welcome
everybody are a natural fit from a business
perspective." After all, who doesn't want to stay
in a beautiful suite that looks and feels good?
