Free surfer Mireia Martinez (also a restaurateur) came to design firm Masquespacio with a vision for a space that would bring East and West together in her hometown. Masquespacio delivered a design for the venue that goes beyond the half-and-half approach that's become a staple for dining hotspots that combine "best of " culinary influences from two diverse points on the map. One big help? The design team wasn't writing this narrative from scratch. The Nipo-Brazilian school of cooking dates back to the early 1900s when Japanese workers came to Brazil to work on coffee plantations. While that culinary mashup didn't give rise in Brazil to an aesthetic as recognizable as the cuisine, the food history did give Masquespacio cofounders Ana Milena Hernandez Palacios and Christophe Penasse a factual base for their bicultural design.
