pond. Unlike the high-speed inspiration behind the name (a series of
world-record-breaking cars and boats raced by British drivers Sir
Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald in the 1920s to 1960s), the
popular Chelsea dining venue took its time to get to the Big Apple-over
a decade, in fact. It's making up for lost time, landing at the Time Warner
Center. (There is another upcoming D&D location at Hudson Yards,
though not a Bluebird). And, says Nancy Ruddy, founder and executive
director of interior design, CetraRuddy, there was no need for a drastic
rethink of Bluebird for the U.S. market.
 "The design of the restaurant is inspired by Britain's most creative
mid-century era, when the celebrated Bluebird race car broke speed
records around the world," says Ruddy. "The restaurant celebrates the
irreverent spirit that defined this era through the use of a mix of colors
and patterns. Memorable moments include a snaking green banquette
adapted from British artists and designers of the era." Even some literal
touches from the London original, such as potted trees, make an appearance. While the venue's style also references Manhattan's vibe in '40s to
the '60s, projects like this are an interesting reminder that local isn't the
only trending buzzword. Cheers! 
