Kevin O'Shea, our cofounder, and I are involved in every intricate
detail. We can't have 50 hotels because we would never be able to
be involved personally in that many properties. So that impacts
our growth strategy. Right now we have four hotels open (under
Salt's corporate umbrella) and five west elm properties under
development. We're also working on Asbury Ocean Club, a luxury
development with residences, a Beach Club and a boutique hotel,
which will open in Asbury Park in 2019. That's a good number if
we plan to stay on top of everything.

2 Hotelier Sam Gellin knew he, his
friends and like-minded travelers
might love New York, but they
don't want hotel experiences that
are all about urban hustle. So he
crafted MADE's rooftop bar, Good
Behavior, as a welcome respite in
the bustling city.
DB: We were up against the major brands, and quite honestly, I
thought, "There's no chance of this ever happening, so we'll just
go along for the ride." When I talked to Jim, I said that if every
hotel wasn't going to be different, I wasn't the right partner.
SG: wHAT MADE yOu BELIEVE THIS wOuLDN'T JuST DEVOLVE
INTO A COOKIE-CuTTER CHAIN AFTER THE FIRST HOTEL OpENED?
DB: It took a lot of dinners and a lot of wine and a lot of
conversations with Jim. I also did my own research. I saw that
west elm had done a really great job with localizing their stores
and giving the store manager in each location a lot of autonomy
and responsibility to choose what they were selling. I talked to
