Schlossman & Hackl, first as a technical
architect and then a project manager, Clary
made a life-changing move: When the
director of business development resigned,
she asked to take on the responsibility of
building the company's pipeline where she
was elevated to the role of senior associate
principal. Years later, she brought her
strategy and leadership skills to HDR,
serving as the director of its health practice
for the western region and immersing
herself in pivotal projects including the
Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago; the
Ohio State University Wexner Medical
Center in Columbus; and a campus
transformation project for University of
Utah Health in Salt Lake City.
Today, Clary is currently tackling MD
Anderson's Institutional Facilities Master
Plan 2030, developing an upgraded facilities
framework for the Houston-based global
cancer center that strengthens its mission
of integrating patient care, research, and
prevention. She's also principal-in-charge

of the new International Academic Medical
Center in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which will
incorporate a rehabilitation hospital, hotel,
and health sciences teaching facilities.
"A lot of my focus has been on health
science and academic medicine, and I want
to continue down that road," says Clary.
"How can companies impact people and
society that not only help patients but the
community?"
Clary is the founder of networking

dinners that bring together women in the
healthcare industry, and her approach to
melding design and care delivery is equally
collaborative and holistic. She aims to break
down cultural barriers as much as physical
ones, like expanding positive shifts in mental
health perceptions.
"Architecture is at this crazy crossroads,"
she says. "We're being commoditized, but
it's also an opportunity to be smarter about
design and experience."
