So, she returned to Pratt, this time for industrial design, and her
graduate studies encompassed a brief stint immersed in exhibition design
at Pentagram, followed by a three-month life-changing internship with
W Hotels that sparked a "13-year adventure," she says. W, then part of
Starwood Hotels & Resorts, was a daring, new concept and Monday design
reviews-with founder Barry Sternlicht-were the norm.
Another hallmark moment was being part of Aloft's conception. As "W's
little sister," it combined affordability with energetic lifestyle and design
components. Khan describes the endeavor as "one of the most satisfying
things I've ever done," launching the brand in an all-consuming 18 months.
Later, she oversaw the renovation of the St. Regis New York. "I would wake
up in the middle of the night thinking about it," she says. The challenge was
taking a 1904-era grande dame rooted in its elaborate history and create "a
compelling narrative that attracts the luxury traveler," she says.
While overseeing design and development at NeueHouse, Khan realized
she missed hotels and found her way to Marriott almost three years ago,
serendipitously reuniting with Aloft following the company's acquisition of
Starwood's portfolio. "There is nothing more fascinating than going back to
a brand you worked on years ago," she says.
