FOUNDERS DAY - EARLY OCTOBER
a newly launched history
appreciation program

President, FWSF

The Far West Ski Foundation held its annual meeting
June 13, 2019 at the start of the
Far West Ski Association Convention.
In addition to Scholarship
grants in the name of 19 racers
totaling $16,750, grants of $500
each were authorized for the
High Fives Foundation, Disabled Sports Eastern
Sierra and Big White Adaptive. This was the
first time three such were grants were made
in one FWSF meeting. Additionally, grants of
$500 were also made to both the Squaw Valley
Museum Foundation and to the California Ski
Library.
The Friday Silent Wine Auction raised
enough to support an adaptive grant. Joe Harvis, assisted by Tom Bundgard, conducted the
auction. Friends - new and continuing - set up
the venue and banners. Joe was named

Trustee at the business meeting
for his continuing service to the
Foundation. Sandra Knapp was
named Recording Secretary.
During the Sunday General Session of FWSA, a
number of continuing and NEW
contributions for scholarships
were made from both individuals, clubs and partners, including these great
skiers: Paul Vlasveld, Linda Westlund, Fire
and Ice SC, John Walsh, Dale Parshall, Skiyente SC, partners Mt. High Snowsports and
San Diego Council, and our super heroes at
Whitefish Mountain Resort and Averill
Hospitality Group.

CELEBRATE FWSA's 90th
BIRTHDAY IN SAN FRANCISCO!

Far West was founded in the Palace
Hotel in San Francisco on October 7, 1930. All
our clubs and councils have founding dates
scattered through the calendar. But why not
schedule your organization for a Founders
Day season kickoff event? We suggest it be a
daytime event outdoors, involving family
foods and probably involving some sports activity. It would be very appropriate to bring
children and grandchildren to a Founders Day
and include them in your club event. Think
of it also as a long range demographic effort
to sustain a robust membership. A great
Founders Day opportunity will be available at
the California Ski Library's Open House on
October 6, 2019 in Norco. It's the Library's
15th year. You would be astonished at the ski
related materials acquired by FWSA Snowsport Builder Award Recipient, Ingrid
Wicken. ss

HISTORIC SKI CLUBS &
COUNCILS, 2019
Five clubs and San Diego Council were
authorized the designation "Historic" at the
FWSA Convention on June 16, 2019. This
brings the Historic total to 28 clubs and two
councils; the roster remains open for additions
in 2020. The Historic BAC presented Modesto (1936), Marin (1938) and Nisei (1958);
Orange presented Orange County SC (1964)
and San Diego presented Torrey Pines
(1961) and the San Diego Council itself
(1963). It's the easiest history program to
enter. All you need to do is furnish the History Chairman an application, proof of founding date 50 or more years ago and in
continuous operation, and a high definition
digital logo. There are a lot of eligible clubs in
BAC and LA Councils. Deadline to get your
historic proofs to the History Chair is March
15, 2020. ss

The Far West Ski Association was born (as the California Ski Association) in the Palm Court of the Palace Hotel at a lunchtime
meeting on October 7, 1930. And, we're going to return to the Palace on October 10, 2020 to celebrate the 90th birthday of this
historic ski association.
Celebrate the achievements, wartime survival, the ups and downs, the medals and the expansion of the Association and its
programs. Meet up with ski friends of times past. See memorabilia and photos from across nine decades. Also see pages 58-59.
Come to San Francisco, one of the greatest party towns in the world.
