Northwest Ski
Club Council
The Mt. Hood
Cultural Center and
Museum organizes
the annual "Ski the
Glade Trail Day", a
unique opportunity
to ski from Timberline down to the town
of Government Camp,
the way earlier generations of skiers used
to do. This trail is
groomed only once
a year, just for
this event.
This is an exciting year for
Northwest Ski Club Council, as
we are turning 40. Also, our racing arm, PACRAT is turning 35.
The joint celebration will be happening in December. Having the
great northwest as our backyard
lets Northwest Ski Club Council
members enjoy a wide variety of
natural beauty. Our council includes clubs in the beautiful
states of Oregon, Washington and
Hawaii. Everyone is out in nature and the great outdoors. Our
home mountains are primarily
volcanoes, promising unique experiences.
Our council consists of approximately 30 clubs and nonprofit organizations. We don't just
ski or snowboard, although that's
how we start the fun. NWSCC
clubs enjoy many different activities, along with social events.
Clubs organize trips (single day
and multiple day) that include
hiking, golfing, biking, camping,
backpacking, sailing, wind-surfing,
kayaking, canoeing--you name it.
Some trips include several activities in the same trip. Other activities include brew festivals,
wine tastings, happy hour gatherings, game nights and the list
continues. Thanks to our clubs,
members can add camaraderie
and fun competition to their lives
while enjoying the outdoors.
Our clubs vary in size and
are located all over the states, but
each is welcoming. One of our
unique clubs, Cascade Ski Club
& Lodge, is one of the oldest in
Oregon, with a deep history dating back more than 80 years.
Their rustically beautiful lodge in
Government Camp welcomes
skiers and families of all ages and
experience. The lodge offers bunkstyle accommodations and inhouse dining. Cascade Prime
Timers Ski Club is for members
age 50+, Skiyente Ski Club is for
women only, and Schnee Vogeli
Ski Club is for men only. These
clubs are long time staples in Oregon.
PACRAT league, part of
NWSCC for 35 years, has provided the exciting opportunity to
participate in recreational alpine
racing for skiers and snowboarders on Mt. Hood. Races are held
at all Mt. Hood resorts. Novices
can learn to compete at their own
skill level. You don't need to organize your own team - check out
their website, and they can get
you connected. All details on races
each season are available online
at PACRATS.org. In a typical
year, over two hundred racers
participate on teams, then celebrate the season at their annual
Rat Attack Party and Awards
Ceremony in the spring. They
are all about having fun on the
mountain. This year's winning
team was "Beer Denners".
NWSCC invites member
clubs to select representatives to
attend council meetings and act
as a liaison between the club and
the council, although all individual club members are welcome.
NWSCC council meetings are
held at least four times a year in
the Portland Metropolitan area.
We support our industry members by holding several meetings
at their locations. NWSCC meetings feature guest speakers from
the ski and snowboard industry,
regional ski areas, media, and resort properties. Sometimes, we
feature someone in the health, fitness, or safety industries, to keep
us updated. We also allow time
for clubs to spotlight events and
trips to help encourage additional
participation. Council meetings
begin with an informal social
time, followed by presentations.
Everyone is invited to attend and
encouraged to get involved.
Check out our website
http://nwskiers.org/. Our website includes information about
each club with links to their websites. We update our calendar
with club and council events/
trips and it includes a search
function. Many clubs organize
trips and offer spaces to individuals belonging to other clubs.
Fine-tuning of the trip schedule is
still happening for the 2019-2020
ski season. Continue to check out
our website as the updates are
done throughout the fall.
The 2020 FWSA Convention Hosted by NWSCC
to be Held in Portland
Want to do some "Rollin' on the River"? NWSCC is pleased
to be hosting the 88th Annual Far West Ski Association Convention, May 28-31, 2020, at the Red Lion Hotel on the River - Jantzen Beach. Located on the scenic Columbia River, this beautiful
property will be ground zero for a weekend of activities, including
a bus tour of Historic Mount Hood, cycling in the Columbia River
Gorge, the Annual "It's Not Your Daddy's" Michael German Memorial Golf Tournament, a bus tour of Southwest Washington
wine country, and our famous Pub Crawl. Our industry partners
will join us for our Friday Night Silent Auction, free to the public,
where fantastic prices can be found for all kinds of vacation packages, with part of the proceeds going to local Northwest charities.
Olympians and other ski industry personalities will be joining us,
as well. Saturday night there will be dining and dancing at our
banquet--and we're throwing in a Casino Night for all of you high
rollers. And the icing on the cake? We'll be celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Far West Ski Association with a birthday party only
FWSA can throw. photo courtesy of Red Lion Hotel on the River
