A popular event for members of the Balboa Ski Club is
their Bike Ride and BBQ at the Yacht Club. After the bike
ride, they watch the end of a sailing race! What a day!

The Orange Council of Ski
Clubs hosted the 87th Annual Far
West Ski Association Convention,
June 13 -16, 2019 at the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells Resort and Spa.
The Volunteer Chairman, Norbert Knapp (LAC) did an exceptional job. Fran Long and her
Central Council of California
helpers were amazing as hosts of
the Friday Pool Party.
Anne Barneson and Agnes
Johnson, based on an idea by
Sheila Van Guilder, created the
Saturday night table decorations. Ken Muzzy created the
convention logo. George Kish,
FWSA By-Laws Chairman, helped
with the Councils' Man &
Woman of the Year event chaired
by Sheri Pershall. Sheila Van
Guilder was The Orange Council
Woman of the Year. Orange
County Ski Club was honored as
a historic club. Sara Rosell and
her USARC volunteers were the
Silent Auction Bid Runners.
The Palms Springs Air Museum Tour was led by Ken
Muzzy. The Legends and Icons
Home Tour was hosted by
Maxine Hanlon and given by Five
Star Adventure Tours of Palm
Springs. The "Get your Party On"
Pub Crawl was sponsored by
Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation, and led by Judy Thurman.
Friday morning started with
The 13th Annual Michael German
Memorial Golf Tournament at In-

dian Wells Golf Resort sponsored
by Club Med and hosted by
Sally Lash (LAC). Carol Kane led
a trip on the San Jacinto Tram.
The special Aqua Serna Spa event
was hosted by Maxine Hanlon
and sponsored by Aspen/Snowmass and Snowmass Tourism.
Debbi Kor, Jeannine Davis and
Jane Wyckoff were helpful guiding FWSA hands. And, Barbara
Razo's timely help smoothed the
communication process. The
Orange Council also appreciated
all the attendees and industry participation. Special thanks goes out
to all of these volunteers from
Orange Council and the other
councils who made this an amazing convention.
We will support Northwest
Ski Club Council as the host of the
88th Annual Far West Convention
in Portland, May 28-31. 2020. So
go "Rollin' on the River" in 2020
with the Northwest Ski Club
Council.
The Orange Council of Ski
clubs has been active with the ski
clubs in the Orange County area
since 1971 when it was established. Sheila Van Guilder is our
President; George Kish, Treasurer; and Maxine Hanlon, V.P. of
Racing, Public Affairs and Communications. New to the team is
Judy Thurman, OC Trip Coordinator for the 2020 FWSA Trip to
Big Sky, Montana. We thank Jess
Gorman for his years of service
and for leading the 2019 FWSA
trip to Steamboat Springs.
Mammoth Mountain Ski
Area is the main focus of most of
our club trips. This year with the

extra long season, a number of
our members posted snow sport
pictures taken in June and July.
We are looking forward to Opening Day - November 9 - to get our
sports equipment out of storage.
Weekend bus trips, weekend
drive up and mid-week drive up
schedules can be found on each
club's website. Trips to Snowmass, Jackson Hole, Park City,
Vail and many others are all included in our skiing programs.
Our club's activities are
year-round. Information is available through websites, meet-up,
Facebook, monthly meetings and
other forms of communication.
Even during the winter snowsports season, the opportunity to
join a group of active, interesting,
and friendly people is available
for both active snowsports participants and non-skiers. We have a
lot to offer, more than just snow.
