National
Brotherhood
of Skiers - Western
Region (NBSWR)
by Todd Hood
Vice President
The National Brotherhood
of Skiers (NBS) is one of the
largest organized snowsports
councils in the country. A nonprofit
organization, the NBS was
formed in 1974 by 13 ski clubs
across the country and now
boasts a membership of 53 clubs
representing over 40 cities with a
membership of over 3,000 skiers,
snowboarders, nordic enthusiasts,
and non-skiers. The organization's
primary goals are to get
more persons of color outdoors
and participating in winter sports,
and to support youth with goals
of representing the United States
and winning snowsports competitions
up to and including the
Olympics.
The Western Region of the
National Brotherhood of Skiers
(NBSWR) is comprised of 14
member clubs serving communities
from San Francisco to
San Diego and Las Vegas to Los
Angeles, including our newest
club of snowsports professionals
nationwide. Our member clubs
have year round outdoor events
including hiking, biking, camping,
cruises, beach travel, festivals, and
of course, snow travel. Club details
are available at http://www.
nbswr.org/clubs.

The NBS Western Region
joins with the Far West Ski Association
to increase the " level of
welcome " in snowsports on and
off the slopes as part of the NBS
Western Region's Cultural Harmony
Initiative (CHI). In addition
to promoting athletes of
color, the organizations will seek
opportunities to educate and expose
member clubs and councils
to the concepts of justice, equity,
diversity, and inclusion. The NBS
Western Region moderates a session
at the Far West Ski Association
Annual Convention -
Snowsports Leadership Academy
on October 9, 2021 in San
Diego, California named " Race to
the Finish - How to be a JEDI
on and off the Slopes " . This session
will present questions and
answers for participants to exchange
input and insights about
race, gender, sex, and a myriad of
characteristics that divide us, in
order for us to unite for fun, adventure,
and successful relationships,
on and off the slopes. We
will not solve the problems of the
world, but the Far West Ski Association
hopes to positively impact
our small section of it.
Members of the NBS Western
Region actively participate in
the Far West Ski Association Annual
Convention. In addition to
Todd Hood (SnowBusters Ski Club
of Pasadena) will moderate the
" Race to the Finish " Snowsports
Leadership Academy session;
Teri Allard (Inland Empire Ski
and Sports Club of Riverside, CA) is
Chair of the 2021 FWSA Silent
Auction; Shauna Kinsey (SnowBusters
Ski Club of Pasadena) and
Frank Robertson (Winter Fox Ski
Association of Los Angeles) represent
the NBS Western Region in
the FWSA Councils' Man/
Woman of the Year Program;
Jane Gutierrez (Four Seasons
West Ski and Snowboard Club of
Los Angeles) serves as Social
Media Chair; and a host of others
attend the Convention as delegates.
The
National Brotherhood
of Skiers Western Region is committed
to working with other
snowsports organizations to pursue
initiatives to cultivate cultural
harmony through the NBS Western
Region's Cultural Harmony
Initiative (CHI). CHI is the Cultural
Harmony Initiative. Chi is a
Chinese word meaning aliveness,
life force energy or life breath. Yin
and Yang is a concept of dualism,
describing how seemingly opposite
or contrary forces may actually
be complementary, interconnected,
and interdependent in
the natural world, and how they
may give rise to each other as
they interrelate to one another.
