Thank you to everyone who shared a memory of our great state! where one can experience so much diversity in the beautiful state. —Jane Kathleen Shaw, Marietta (Cobb EMC) A Thanksgiving honeymoon My favorite Georgia vacation was my 1980 honeymoon at Unicoi State Park near Helen. My fiancé and I visited Helen and saw a sign for Unicoi, so we decided to take a look. Once inside the lodge, my fiancé said, “This is where I’d like to come for our honeymoon.” I inquired about Honeymoon in the a cabin. The clerk mountains smiled and said, “All our cabins are booked a year in advance for the week prior to Thanksgiving, but I’ll check.” As she looked over the log, the phone rang. She shook her head at me and mouthed, “I’m sorry.” I headed back to the lobby where my fiancé was waiting. I dreaded having to tell her that we would have to make other plans. Before I reached her, however, I heard my name and turned to see the reservations clerk walking toward me. She said, “You aren’t going to believe this, but the call I took as you left my office was someone cancelling a cabin reservation for the week of Thanksgiving.” We have returned several times to Unicoi and Helen. THE MOUNTAINS Going fishing 22A www.georgiamagazine.org ➤ Family campout Our favorite Georgia family vacation is when we went camping at Moccasin Creek State Park, in Clarkesville, in April 2009. This was our first time camping there and it was beyond our expectations! My children, Brannon and Lauren, fished every day in Moccasin Creek, which runs into Lake Burton, and caught several trout. We also took a trip to the Tallulah River, where we fished for trout. The river was absolutely beautiful and crystal clear. Another stop was Lake Burton Trout Hatchery, where we learned about the different types of trout that are released into the streams, how the streams are stocked for trout season and even got to watch the trout being fed. This was an amazing camping trip for our whole family, and we’ll definitely camp there again. —Jamie Hambrick, Carnesville (Hart EMC) Georgia Wine Highway GEORGIA MAGAZINE ➤ Autumn ‘leaves’ us breathless Our third annual fall vacation to a scenic vineyard along the Georgia Wine Highway was a magical as ever. My husband, and I celebrated our 46th anniversary on Oct. 19, while our eldest son, Kevin, celebrated his birthday on Oct. 15. His wife, Laura, and our youngest son, Jimy, and friend Chris helped us mark the occasion. We rented a cottage in the woods by a rapidly moving stream and attended the annual wine festival on Oct. 24. Good food and wine, friendly folks, grape-stomping, wine-tasting and a hayride made for a thoroughly entertaining day. We were even allowed to bring Luke the golden retriever! We also took pleasure in long walks through the woods close to the Appalachian Trail. We marveled at the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And the towns of Blairsville and Dahlonega were close by with their own unique charms. One rainy night, the lights went out and we relied on candles. What a wonderful evening of conversation!
