Changing their name from the Pink Ladies to the Blue Angels in 2006, 40 active auxiliary members assist the hospital in all areas, including emergency room registration, the lab and human resources. They also manage the Bee Hive Gift Shop where hospital-goers can purchase refreshments, magazines and fresh flowers. For the past 20 years, the auxiliary has sponsored the Love Light Christmas Tree, complete with entertainment, refreshments and a light for every person who donates to the auxiliary. Auxiliary members have been recognized for their hard work from the community and the nation. The local chamber of commerce gave them the Walton County Community Service Award in 1986, and President Bill Clinton personally recognized the group when he discovered that a volunteer had clocked in 20,000-plus hours at the hospital. The WRMC Auxiliary also holds many fundraisers, including sales of jewelry, books and linens for employees. Profits from their gift shop and all proceeds of the fundraisers go toward assisting the hospital with medical supplies and more, including wheelchairs, warming blankets, children’s tables and coloring books. A portion of the funds are also awarded as scholarships to nursing students. In 2008, the auxiliary created the “Handed Down and Passed Around” cookbook. There’s even a section dedicated to seafood and game for specialty foods like crawfish and deer meat. Below is a hearty harvest recipe from the Main Dishes section. Hurry Up Chicken Pot Pie Elise Gates 2 cups cooked chicken breasts, chopped 2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced 1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots 1/2 cup frozen green peas 1 (10-3/4-ounce) can cream of chicken soup 1 cup chicken broth Salt and pepper, optional 1-1/2 cups instant biscuit mix 1 cup milk 1 stick melted butter Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a greased 2-quart casserole dish, layer the chicken, eggs, carrots and peas. Mix the soup and chicken broth, and season with salt and pepper, if desired. Pour over the layers. Stir together the biscuit mix and milk, and pour over casserole. Drizzle butter over biscuit dough. Bake until the topping is golden brown, 30-40 minutes.
