The Veterans Council of Chatham County is honoring World War II veterans at a free ceremony Nov. 7 at 3 p.m. in Savannah where officials will unveil a new walkthrough monument dedicated to the heroes who served during the war. Veterans associations, businesses and nationwide donors have contributed more than $720,000 toward the monument as well as purchasing engraved memorial bricks that will accompany the monument along Savannah’s riverfront. Staffers at Roosevelt’s Little White House Historic Site in Warm Springs will be collecting photographs of those who have served, or are serving, in our nation’s armed forces to adorn their Honor Trees during the Christmas season. Drop off copies of photographs (not the originals), with a memorial message written on the back on Dec. 4-5. Dahlonega plays a key role in the U.S. Capitol’s Christmas celebration, as the North Georgia town hosts the only Southeastern stop for the Capitol Christmas Tree Nov. 24-26 during its trip from the Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming to Washington, D.C. Jeff Underwood Trucking of Dahlonega is transporting the 75-foot tree in a custom cradle atop a double flatbed truck as it wends its way 3,000 miles through the U.S. on several stops before being installed and decorated in D.C. later this month. Take a self-guided audio tour of cities around the state by downloading an MP3 podcast. It’s as simple as visiting local convention and visitors bureaus’ websites in Georgia. Rich in Civil War history, locomotive history, notable cemeteries, stately homes and a bustling town square, Marietta offers much for visitors. Liberty notes Religious freedom in the First Amendment In the July 2010 issue in “Viewpoint” [page 5], Georgia EMC President/CEO Paul Wood suggested a program to educate citizens about our Constitution. “Liberty notes,” a regular highlight, will serve to fulfill this mission in GEORGIA Magazine. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” —First two clauses from the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution The first 10 amendments to the Constitution, known as the Bill of Rights, include freedoms cherished by all Americans. The First Amendment begins with two clauses that secure religious freedom. It plainly states that Congress cannot pass a law that respects one church or religious group over another. The phrase “or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” is known as the Free Exercise Clause.
