Wilson, who lives in nearby Cleveland, used to take her children to the parade each year. Now the grandmother of two 2-year-olds, she looks forward to continuing the family tradition with the next generation. “I hope to take them and show them the wonders of Christmas in a small town, shopping in a small town and not the big-box store kind of thing,” she says. “I’m all about that.” Each year, as evening settles on the square, the white lights that drape every tree and building begin to sparkle in the darkening sky. Jones looks forward to moments like this. “In the dusky time of night, you have lights that are illuminating the square, and carolers and a live nativity, and … Oh, my gosh! If that doesn’t put you in the spirit, then we don’t know how to help ya!” Deborah Geering is a freelance writer based in Decatur.
