2011 Walter Harrison Scholarship Student job shadows winners announced! at Carroll EMC Seven outstanding Georgia students have received a $1,000 Walter Harrison Scholarship. Created 20 years ago, the scholarship is awarded annually to students who excel in the areas of grade point average, SAT scores, academic standing, scholastic honors, and who demonstrate a financial need. The award pays tribute to the late Walter Harrison, a pioneer in the rural electrification movement. The 2011 scholarship winners and their electric coops include Michael Land, Amicalola EMC in Jasper; Katherine Bickley, Cobb EMC in Marietta; Vania Lee, Flint Energies in Reynolds; Whitley Salann Clark, Planters Whitley Salann Clark EMC in Millen; Jennifer Dandron, Rayle EMC in Washington; Tara Marie Bishop, Snapping Shoals EMC in Covington; and Maria Westerfield, Upson EMC in Thomaston. Jennifer Dandron Michael Land Oglethorpe Power donates $4,000 in scholarships Tucker-based Oglethorpe Power Corp. recently presented $4,000 in scholarship funds to the Floyd County College & Career Academy to support the academy’s 2011 scholarship program. The money will fund eight $500 scholarships—one for each of the school’s career path offerings—for students attending a technical college in the fall. The funds were presented at a ceremony at the College & Career Academy by Julio Trujillo, maintenance manager for Oglethorpe Power at the Rocky Mountain Hydroelectric Plant in Floyd County. Oglethorpe Power owns about 75 percent of the Rocky Mountain facility. More online at www.georgiamagazine.org May 2011 FLOYD COUNTY COLLEGE & CAREER ACADEMY As part of a class project, Hunter Rider, a junior at Carrollton High School in Carrollton, recently chose to shadow an employee at Carroll Electric Membership Corp. (EMC) in Carrollton. Because he likes the outdoors and grew up around the electric utility industry—his dad performed line work for many years—Rider thought it would be a fun experience. On March 11, 2011, Carroll EMC Line Supervisor Pat Albright had the opportunity to show Rider what it’s like to work at an electric co-op. During the day, Rider watched Carroll EMC crews perform rightof-way clearing and changing a line. However, riding in a bucket truck was Rider’s favorite part of the day.
