I also have a solar-powered ﬂagpole light, so I can ﬂy the U.S. ﬂag lit at night. —Eloise Grubaugh, Buckhead Lions Club helped me see A friend of mine from Barnesville gave me a gift of GEORGIA Magazine, and my ﬁrst copy featured the Georgia Lions Lighthouse [see “Bringing the future into focus,” February 2011, page 20]. Growing up in rural schools, I was always able to sit where I could see the blackboard. When we moved to Forest Park, Ga., I transferred to a big school, where I was seated in the back of the classroom. I always got by somehow without good vision. Three months after I got there, though, the teacher put a big test on the blackboard, and I couldn’t read the questions. I was too shy to tell her, so I tried to guess what they were. The classmate who graded my paper laughed so hard and showed it to other kids who also laughed. The teacher came back to see what was going on, and after I explained, she gave me an oral test, and I knew the answers. She asked if I had ever had my eyes checked. Because we couldn’t afford an eye exam, she talked to the Lions Club, and they referred me for an eye doctor appointment. Two weeks later, I got my glasses, and I was so shocked by what I could see! A month later the Lions Club had a meeting, and she took me there so they could see me in my glasses. They gathered around, shook my hand and wished me good luck. This was around 1953. As years went on, I moved to contacts and then to RK surgery. I turned 70 this year and of the things that work or don’t, my eyes are great— and I have the Lions Club to thank for that! Our winners from the March 2011 issue are Gary Monk, of Marietta, who took the photo, and Mary Edmondson, of Ball Ground, who correctly guessed that it is the Blood Mountain Shelter on the Appalachian Trail. Monk, president of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, says the shelter was built in the early 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is scheduled to undergo restoration soon. At 4,450 feet, Blood Mountain is the highest point on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. Evidently, many GEORGIA Magazine readers are hiking enthusiasts; we received close to 400 correct guesses from throughout the state and some from neighboring states.
