A legacy with layers Vidalia Onion Museum now open For years we’ve heard our mothers and grandmothers tout the necessity of using only the sweetest Georgia onions for their cherished recipes. Chefs from all over the country are well-acquainted with the distinct flavor of the Vidalia onion, grown exclusively in a 20-county region of Southeast Georgia, but they may not know the rich history that brought national attention to our official state vegetable. The Vidalia Onion Museum in Vidalia now offers guests an opportunity to learn about the veggie in a whole new way. Wendy Brannen, executive director of the Vidalia Onion Committee, explains the nostalgia linked with the Vidalia: “There’s a heritage associated with the Vidalia onion. The Historic Preservation Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with the Georgia chapter of DOCOMOMO (DOcumentation and COnservation of buildings, sites, and neighborhoods of the MOdern MOvement), has announced a photo contest to coincide with National Preservation Month in May. The “Mid-Century Modern Georgia” photo contest seeks photos that depict buildings or sites in the state that are a part of the design movement that lasted from the 1930s through the 1970s. Entries are due by May 15. Kids will love the famous Vidalia mascot and “Yumion” coloring wall; and adults will enjoy their behind-the-scenes peek into the intricate packing (Vidalia onions are still hand-planted and hand-harvested to this day) and marketing that bring the onion from field to fork.
