Getting there Nestled between Georgia Highway 400 in Forsyth County to the west and Interstate 985 in Gwinnett and Hall counties to the east, Lake Lanier is easily accessible. Gainesville, in Hall County, is the nearest large city, situated on the lake’s northeast side. Cumming is located just west of Lake Lanier. Buford Dam Road, which transverses the dam with a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake and the Chattahoochee River below the dam, runs between I-985 and Georgia Highway 400, but it does not intersect either highway. Locals can provide good directions from either major thoroughfare to access Buford Dam Road. Alan Hope, who grew up in Gainesville and has published the lake’s monthly Lakeside on Lanier for almost 20 years, has a bird’s-eye view of the lake. “Lake Lanier is probably one of the best-kept secrets in the Southeast for recreation of all kinds,” Hope says. “It is amazing how this area has grown to attract nearly 8 million visitors each year, all with the same goal of having a memorable experience on one of the nation’s best lakes.” Pamela A.
