Unquestionably, the world is a better place without the evil Osama bin Laden and I am glad justice has been served. It was proper to bring his body out as proof that one of the most notorious criminals in history is now, at last, gone. And it was appropriate to bury his body at sea, thereby preventing his grave from becoming a shrine for every misguided soul seeking inspiration to continue bin Laden’s evil. Who among us was not proud to see that the crew of the USS Carl Vinson was given responsibility for the bin Laden burial? For those who don’t remember, the aircraft carrier’s namesake, Carl Vinson, of Georgia, served 50 years in the House of Representatives. Rep. Vinson, as chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, was a stalwart defender of America. The carrier, no doubt, is guided by Vinson’s creed: “No one who represents America should put any interest before our nation’s security.” Vinson would be pleased that the ship carrying his name played a key role in bringing some closure to this awful chapter in our history. It is my hope that the death of bin Laden also will bring some closure for the families of the victims More online at www.georgiamagazine.org who perished in the 9/11 attacks. The killing of another is never something to celebrate, but killing bin Laden was justified in many ways, including self-defense. He attacked America, and we know from materials confiscated that he intended to attack us again. It was also clear that he continued to recruit new followers. As a Christian, I know I’m supposed to forgive bin Laden fully. I know it, but I can’t, especially when acts of terror resulting from the seeds he planted continue to cause death and destruction around the world. It’s not easy to dismiss the sense of rage I felt on that day as I watched the Twin Towers fall, the Pentagon burning or that black scar on a Pennsylvania farm where Flight 93 crashed. Part of what makes us vulnerable to the evil designs of people like bin Laden is that we are an open and free society, and so long as this nation exists, we will be vulnerable to terrorist attacks. It is my view that the example of Vinson’s leadership on national security should be learned by every member of Congress who has taken an oath to protect America in the 21st century.
