Nathan Deal! Deal was raised on a farm in Sandersville by parents who were both educators; his high school debate team won the state debate championship; as an FFA member, he took second place in the national FFA convention in public speaking; he was a 4-H member [he’s developed his “head, heart, hands and health”], (see page 14 about his recent 4-H Green Jacket Award), and he was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta. That’s certainly a well-grounded start, but Deal went on to get a law degree from Mercer University [he’s Mercer’s 2013 “Georgian of the Year”], practice law in Gainesville and serve as a juvenile court judge and county attorney until he ran for the state senate in 1980. Then he won a seat in the U.S. Congress in 1992, serving 17 years. In 2010, Georgia voters decided he should lead the state as governor. See page 18 to read how this man went “From rural Georgia to the Governor’s Mansion.” We’ve also uncovered some history in another part of rural Georgia. Camp Lawton, a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp near Millen, was constructed in 1864 near the end of the Civil War to ease overcrowding at the Andersonville prison, outside Americus. It is considered one of the most well-preserved historical sites in the country, hidden for more than a century and encompassed by Magnolia Springs State Park.
