The 2009 flood: Douglasville-based GreyStone
Power
linemen Josh Jones and Joe Nicholson
saved a young
man from the floods of 2009 in Douglas
County when they
rescued him from the top of his submerged
car. The flood
left nearly 40,000 GreyStone members
without power, and
nine people lost their lives in Douglas
County due to the
floods. Above, linemen Clint Capes and
Ronnie Martin used
local member Steve Seagraves' airboat
to make repairs.
After the 2011 Ringgold tornado, crews from Blue Ridge
Mountain EMC in Young Harris
work on a hilly, cross-country
line in the North Georgia EMC
territory.

t's not uncommon for crews of Georgia's
electric
membership corporations (EMCs)
to cross the line.
In times of trouble, they've been
known to do just
that-to cross their territory lines,
or even state lines,
to help their fellow cooperatives
restore electricity after
destructive storms.
Whether power lines are downed
due to ice and
snow, high winds or floodwaters,
the linemen who leave
the comfort of their community to
travel to other regions
while battling the elements have one
goal in mind: to
get the lights on.
"When you come to work with an
electric co-op, it
becomes your mindset to keep the
lights on," says Scott
Dupree, a line crew leader with North
Georgia EMC in
Dalton. "You learn that and, honestly,
I can't explain it.
It's just the profession we choose,
and getting the power
back on is our main concern."

Airplane clarification
On page 14 of the December
2013 issue, there is a picture of the
B1-B bomber that graces the entry of
the Spirit of Flight hangar at the Museum of Aviation, Robins Air Force
Base. The caption identifies the aircraft as a Boeing B1-B. Although this
is true only in a business sense, that
is a misconception.
All 100 B1-B bombers were manufactured and delivered to the Air
Force by May 1988 by the aviation
division of Rockwell International.
This was well before the acquisition
by Boeing of Rockwell in 1996.
The aircraft should have been
more correctly identified as a Rockwell B1-B Lancer.
My desire would be that a clarification of the history of this aircraft
that led us out of the Cold War be
included in a future issue.

4-H thanks
Thank
you
for sponsoring the
2013 4-H Photography Project. My
project has given
me experience in
the field of my
profession, and I
want to thank you
for that. You mean
a lot to me and my
fellow 4-H'ers.

In addition to restoring power throughout
the nation, Georgia linemen also go to
other countries to get power restored-or
installed for the first time, as these
linemen did for the village of Yie, in the
Sudan in Africa in May 2009. Before
raising
a new power pole, team members Phil
Hogan from Clarkesville-based Habersham
EMC, Danny Derry from Grundy Electric
Cooperative in Trenton, Mo., Jeff Losekey
from Wheatland Rural Electric Association
in Wheatland, Wyo., and Josh Allen
from Habersham EMC take a moment
to share the excitement with the children
in
the village.

Restoring power, touching lives
We loved your article on restoring power, touching lives [see
"Crossing the line,"
January 2014, page 18;
bit.ly/gmlinemen]. My
husband and I live on
Cherokee Valley Road
in Ringgold and were
hit by the April 27,
2011, tornado. All of
the lines and poles
were completely down and tangled.
We were very impressed with the
performance of North Georgia EMC.
A supervisor, who I am sorry to say I
can't remember his name, checked
on us every day. We lost power on
Wednesday night and, much to our
shock, already had it back on by
Monday. There was so much devastation; we thought it could be weeks
before our power was restored.
After such a terrible experience,
bringing back the power was the first
feeling of getting back to normal.
You just don't know how much you
all were appreciated.

Viewpoint responses
What a great time I had reading
the "Studs are nails, right?" article
by Paul Wood. [See Viewpoint, January 2014, page 5; bit.ly/stnls.] It was
funny!
-Joyce Kent, via email
A few issues ago, Paul Wood had
an article bemoaning the fact that
high schools today don't teach skills
like measuring and cutting a board as
they did in the past. There is a high
school in Georgia that teaches these
skills and more while students design
and build their own wood projects. I
would suggest that you get in contact
with Houston County High School
and request a tour of their Fine Furniture shop. You will be impressed as I
am sure it is one of the best in the
state, if not the nation. While there, I
also suggest that you view the Graphic Communications and Engineering
shops. They are also top-notch.
-Mark Howard, via email
Kudos
I enjoy your magazine every
month, courtesy of Clarkesville-based
Habersham Electric Membership

columns are great!
