Morgan West, a senior at White
County High School in Cleveland,
was selected as one of the winners of a nationwide student service
project grant contest coordinated by
the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association in partnership with
generationOn, the youth service
enterprise of the Points of Light
Foundation, an organization dedicated to volunteer service.
The program offered a $500 grant
to one 2014 Washington Youth Tour
participant from each state to start or
grow a service project of their choice.
Applicants were required to partner
with a nonprofit organization for the
project.
Grant winners were chosen from
a pool of students sent by their electric cooperatives last June on the
2014 Washington Youth Tour (WYT),
an annual, weeklong, all-expensespaid educational trip to our nation's
capital.
West was one of two delegates to
represent Clarkesville-based Habersham Electric Membership Corp.
(EMC) on the WYT. Her grant will
directly support White County High
School's Secret Closet, a program
launched by the school's National
Honor Society so students can anonymously gain access to hygiene items,
clothes, school supplies or food, with
school staff overseeing the closet to
protect the students' privacy.

By purchasing pink hard hats by 3M, Douglasville-based GreyStone Power helped fund
that company's $15,000 donation to breast
cancer research.

So many individuals and families have
been touched by breast cancer, which is
why more than half of Georgia's electric
membership co-ops (EMCs) got involved
with this issue during October as part of
Breast Cancer Awareness Month. EMCs
provided funding, contributed in-kind resources, coordinated fundraising or volunteered. Employees pictured here and at
many EMCs across the state donned pink
hard hats to show their support.
