These perennials are a great solution for bare spots under shade
trees. Plant them in well-drained soil
in full to partial shade.
Hostas: These lush perennials
offer low-maintenance greenery in
lots of colors, variegation patterns
and sizes. Once established, hostas
are hardy and water-wise. Plant in
well-drained soil in partial shade.
Hydrangeas: These deciduous
shrubs are a classic for Southern gardens. The iconic pom-poms of blue,
pink or white flowers bloom in spring
and summer. They prefer moist but
well-drained soil, so don't overwater
them. Plant hydrangeas in filtered sun
to partial shade; a few hours of morning sun are best.
New Guinea impatiens: These
plants bloom profusely in summer
and fall in many brilliant colors,
including lavender, pink, orange, red
and white. They like consistent moisture and regular feedings to keep
them looking their best. Plant them
in partial shade to partial sun.

e all love those big shade trees in
the yard, and we're thankful for
the lush branches blocking the
sun's rays, especially on hot days. But
when the tree canopy is really dense,
it can be a challenge to find other
plants that can flourish in the shade.
Here are six plants that will be right
at home under those trees.
Begonias: These low-maintenance, deer-resistant annuals produce
rich red or vivid pink blooms during
spring and summer. Several varieties provide different bloom colors,
foliage colors and sizes. They prefer
consistent moisture. Plant them in full
shade to partial sun.
Caladiums: Grown for their
uniquely shaped and colorful foliage,
deer-resistant caladiums add a fun
tropical look to any shady spot. Foliage colors and patterns vary greatly,
offering lots of options in white, pink
and red. They prefer consistent moisture and love heat but not direct sun,
so plant in full shade to partial sun.

known as coral bells, feature heartshaped, boldly veined leaves in a
