New scam aimed at
EMC members
E
lectric membership cooperative
(EMC) members should be on
guard for the latest ploy to obtain
quick cash and personal information,
such as credit card and Social Security numbers. Several metro Atlanta
EMCs have reported that scammers
have been calling their members;
the scammers claim to be with the
electric cooperative and demand immediate payment to avoid disconnection.
While utility scams are nothing
new, thieves have created a new
con: They manipulate an outgoing
telephone number so that on caller
ID the call appears to come from
an EMC. If a recipient dials the fake
number, he or she will hear an onhold message that mimics a real
EMC customer greeting. Because the
phone number and greeting appear
to be legitimate, the practice can
catch consumers unaware.
Stay on high alert regarding any
call in which someone claiming to be
employed by the EMC demands immediate payment and threatens disconnection. Never provide payment
information to that caller.
If a member doubts the legitimacy of a call, he or she should call
the EMC office number found on the
most recent billing statement and ask
to speak with a customer service representative.
There also have been limited reports of scammers showing up at a
service address in clothing marked
with what appears to be EMC logos,
attempting to collect a past-due bill
and threatening to instantly disconnect service.
Georgia EMC, the statewide trade
association for the 41 electric cooperatives in Georgia, will continue to
work with the Consumer Protection
Unit of the Georgia Department of
Law, under the leadership of Attorney General Chris Carr, to report increased scam activity.
