trespassers and arsonists and fighting
fires when they occurred. Four years
later, in 1918, he was promoted to forest
ranger. Although he took his job
seriously, "Ranger" Woody marched to a
different drummer. One of his favorite
quotes was, "Do what needs to be done
and ask permission later."
Part of the ranger's job was helping
the Forest Service acquire thousands of
acres of land that eventually became
part of the vast Chattahoochee National Forest. Woody
was so good at negotiating land sales that he often
carried large sums of money in his pocket. If someone
wanted to sell a few acres, he paid them in cash. Later,
he was reimbursed by the Forest Service. He disliked
wearing an official uniform, because he wanted people
to trust him and consider him "one of the boys."
Even though the primary objective of the Forest
Service was to restore the forests, as
mandated by Congress, Woody had a
vision that far surpassed simply
growing trees. He wanted to fill the
woods and streams with the wildlife
that once had occupied those
mountains.

around the refuge
had increased to
an estimated
2,000 animals.
One of Woody's crowning achievements was
negotiating the sale
of Sosebee Cove (near
Vogel State Park) to the
Forest Service in 1925.
Because of its diverse
old-growth forest and
incredible array of wildflowers, the unique 178acre tract was made
into a preserve. Today,
the Coosa backcountry
hiking trail circles the
preserve.
