All hail the queen of vines

back to the 1930s. Its large flowers
are deep blue to purple with contrasting red centers. 'Ramona' puts on a
show in early spring and then disappears long before the white hydrangea flowers appear in August.
In addition to their magnificent
flowers, many clematis offer attractive
seed heads after they finish blooming. A good example is Clematis texenis 'Gravetye Beauty,' a hybrid with
deep-red flowers from midsummer to
autumn.
These are just a few examples of
ways to combine clematis with other
plants.

shrub makes the perfect backdrop for
clematis blooms. A clematis with
flowers of contrasting color also can
make a hydrangea or rose bush in full
bloom even more dramatic.
Broder's No. 1 clematis is 'Arabella,' which also is my favorite. She
introduced me to this charmer years
ago, and I have been growing it ever
since. A non-climbing vine, 'Arabella'
is best used as a ground cover. Broder uses it throughout her garden, and
in early spring she transplants 10 to
20 rooted plantlets to new areas.
A selection of Clematis integrifolia, 'Arabella' is a great choice for
Georgia gardeners because it thrives
despite heat and humidity, producing
masses of 2- to 3-inch-wide flowers
that open deep purple and then fade
to cornflower blue. I let mine ramble
through borders in my landscape,
where it blooms for months, beginning in May and continuing into fall.
Taking a cue from Broder, I use
my Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva'
as a living trellis for Clematis 'Ramona,' a tried-and-true cultivar that dates

hen I first met Lyndy Broder in
her 3-acre Stockbridge garden
15 years ago, her passion for
clematis was evident everywhere you
looked. Her love affair with this enchanting vine in all its forms continues today. She views every tree and
shrub as a potential structure for displaying her hundreds of different
clematis.
She laughingly admits that she
probably has more than 300 cultivars
growing in her garden, not counting
the 70 in pots that are waiting to be
planted.
She says she chose clematis because she wanted to incorporate
more of the color blue in her garden,
and many clematis varieties have
flowers that are different shades of
blue as well as lavender, pink, white
and red.
Broder says that she "loves their
versatility in the garden; they add
such depth to the design and extend
the interest of different areas in my
landscape." She likes to grow the
vines through shrubs, since a green
