an inmate was training.
"Anytime I hear a dog when I'm
working, I want to look over to see
it," Chisholm says. "I saw this dog
with markings that I recognized. He
was one of nine puppies our dog
had several years ago, and we had
given this pup to a neighbor down
the street. I had named him Bison."
Somehow, the dog ended up at
a shelter and became part of Operation New Hope's program. Inmate
Tecarra Murphy was his trainer.
"We were walking the dogs,
and I heard someone yelling, 'Hey,
where did you get that dog?'" Murphy says. "Right away the dog that
we called Mr. Ross must have recognized his voice, because he was very
excited. Mr. Chisholm was so happy
to see him, too."
At the adoption event a few
days later, Chisholm adopted Mr.
Ross for his godsister.
"She has three kids and will give
him a great home," he says, with
tears streaming down his face. "You
know, there's a purpose in all this,
and now I'll get to see him again."
Emotions run high at pet adoptions. The families are so grateful
to welcome loving, trained dogs
into their homes. And the inmates,
who've lived with and trained the
dogs for four weeks, see the impact
of their commitment and dedication.
"Operation New Hope has really
turned lives around," Wilcher says.
"The program gives inmates something positive to occupy their minds
and their time, and it gives them a
good mindset when they get out.
They're realizing that there's hope
they didn't have before. And dogs
that would otherwise be overlooked
get forever homes with loving families who really want them."
