aura Pope Steele, a meeting
planner from Sandy Springs, has
organized an ongoing letter-writing effort to thank the front-line workers
caring for COVID-19 patients. She has
collected more than 600 letters from her
neighborhood, community groups and
several churches for the health care workers at metro Atlanta hospitals, including
Northside, WellStar Kennestone, Emory
St. Joseph's, Emory University Hospital
and Piedmont Atlanta.
"A handwritten message-especially
in this digital age-goes a long way in
showing our appreciation for the health
care workers, who have been under an
incredible amount of stress during this
difficult time," Steele says.
When she first circulated word about
her project in early April, she received
nearly 150 letters within the first week.
Some people wrote 10 or more letters and
included artwork from their children as
well as prayers and poetry.

Community coordinators and volunteers at the hospitals have helped her
distribute letters to staff in the emergency
departments and the COVID, rehabilitation and respiratory units.
"The workers who have received the
letters and notes have been very grateful.
A personal note really gives them a boost
and brightens their day," Steele says.
Word of her efforts has spread quickly. She has gotten calls from a woman in
Roswell who is interested in starting a
letter-writing project and from a woman
in Hartford, Conn., who heard about the
project through her company.
