" Our most popular items during the holidays
are our sweet potato pies, pecan pies and five-flavor
pound cakes, " Brown says. " During December, we
have eggnog-rum and sweet potato cupcakes that are
popular. We also make our version of a bûche de Noël
[yule log cake]. "
All bakery goods are made with recipes from
family and friends.
" We like bringing those recipes for
other people to try, and because we
love them as a family, we decided to
sell them for everybody else to love
and enjoy, " Houston-Pickett says.

BAKING GROUNDS

In 1982, Baker's Pride started
out as a small corner store in Savannah. Today, it's a popular choice
among many generations of families
celebrating birthdays, holidays and
other special occasions.
" Baker's Pride is Savannah's family
bakery. It's an old-fashioned, made-by-hand-mostly-fromscratch bakery, " says co-owner Al Lang, who works at the bakery
with his wife, Trisha, and mother-in-law, JoElla Baker. " My
mother, Betty [Lang], retired a few years ago, but now we have
my cousin Barbara Kaylor helping us in managing. Both my
sons, Josh and Andrew, have worked here. "
During the holidays, Baker's Pride creates holidaydecorated yule logs, petits fours, cupcakes, cakes and more.

" We're a bakery cafe, so we offer a
wonderful breakfast and lunch, " says
Malinda McCaslin, owner of The
Baking Grounds in Buford. " We have
about five [cases] filled with custom
cakes, petits fours, cookies, decorated
cookies, cake pops, handmade rolled
Danishes and pastries. We do homemade bread as well. We do several
hundred custom cakes a year and
several hundred wedding cakes a year. "
Five to six McCaslin family members
work at The Baking Grounds.
" When we were raising our children, the
huge advantage was that we could have our
children here with us, " McCaslin says. " It instilled a great
passion for fresh-baked items as well as an incredible work
ethic in them. They worked along with us and were a great help,
but I think it was a great advantage to them as well. "
