University of Georgia's 2020 Flavor of
Georgia Food Product Contest in October. Owners Warren and Jen Simmons
created the company's savory Cheddar

in the contest. Judges sampled foods from
30 finalists and, because of the pandemic,
listened to virtual product pitches before
choosing the winners.

Athens' musical heritage honored

about Hall Johnson, a noted
African American musician,

composer and choral director born
in Athens in 1888?
Johnson and these bands represent
some of the town's rich musical heritage
and are among the 10 inductees to the
new Athens Music Walk of Fame. Others
inductees are Drive-By Truckers, Danger
Mouse (Brian Joseph Burton), The
Elephant 6 Recording Co., Neal Pattman,
Pylon and Vic Chesnutt.

The Athens Cultural Affairs
Commission has designated
a two-block area downtown
marked with guitar-pickshaped, bronze plaques
honoring these musicians. Created in August, the walk of fame
passes by renowned music venues,
such as the Morton Theatre, the 40
Watt Club and the Georgia Theatre.
Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly
Girtz says that additional musical artists
will be inducted in the coming years.

* Connecting students. In November, the
city of Woodstock presented the Cherokee County School District with a $90,000
grant to purchase mobile Wi-Fi hotspot
devices to help students engaged in
digital learning during the pandemic.

* App alert. The new Georgia Grown Trails
app provides information about stores,
farms, towns and trail stops along several
trails designated by the Georgia Department of Agriculture. For details on the

* GivingTuesday. Georgians who want to
donate to nonprofit organizations can
take part in the state's largest day of
giving on Dec. 1, also known as GAgives

* Above-average season. The Georgia Sea
Turtle Cooperative documented 2,783
nests and 170,000-plus loggerhead sea
turtle hatchlings on Georgia beaches
this year. Georgia Department of Natural
Resources Sea Turtle Program Coordinator Mark Dodd reports that loggerhead
nesting has been trending upward statewide by about 3.9 percent a year since
1989. Beaches at Wassaw, Blackbeard and
Little Cumberland islands had more than
twice as many nests this year as were
documented in the 1970s; nestings on
these three islands account for about 30
percent of the state's annual totals.
