he word " technical " in the Technical College System of Georgia's (TCSG)
name can be a bit confusing, TCSG Commissioner Greg Dozier says. The
word often implies " vo-tech " or " community college, " but neither of these is exactly
right. However, as more people discover the system's opportunities, those associations are starting to disappear.
" The mindset is changing, but we still have to curb some of the viewpoint of
what a technical college is, " Dozier says. " First, we're not a school system; we're a
college system. Second, we see ourselves as the arm to the workforce in Georgia
and the U.S. There are many great high-paying, skill-based jobs out there, and we
are training individuals in a host of things, from cosmetology and construction to
cloud computing and Apple coding. "
The focus of the TCSG is on having its students succeed sooner, Dozier says.
" Students can get a skill, get an associate degree and get to work. We have a
99 percent placement rate, and around 87 percent of that is in [the
student's chosen] field. If you come to the Technical College System,
you get an [education], and you will be employed. "
