he accomplishments of talented, creative people often go
unnoticed during their lifetimes. Consider Vincent Van Gogh's
artwork, Emily Dickinson's poetry and Oscar Wilde's ingenious
prose. It's not until they pass away that others realize how significant those
accomplishments were.
That's not the case with Celestine Sibley.
The Florida-born author, columnist and journalist was recognized
even in the early days of her career as someone to watch. After honing her
skills at newspapers in Mobile, Ala., and Pensacola, Fla., Sibley arrived at
The Atlanta Constitution in 1941 as a government reporter.
Although she was often the only woman in a male-dominated newsroom, she didn't consider herself a pioneer. That's what she told former
Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) photographer Joe Benton, who often
went on story assignments with Sibley in the 1970s.
" She said, 'Oh, I really wasn't much of a trailblazer; that would have
been Peggy,' "  he recalls. " I didn't know who Peggy was and was flabbergasted to learn she was referring to Margaret Mitchell. She then said: 'I
came after her. Now, I was a bit shy, but Peggy was anything but. She was a
tiny, little thing, but she stood toe-to-toe with those men in the newsroom
smoking their big cigars. And she wore pants! I could never have done any
of that, so I'm glad she was there first!' "
