Meet U.S. Air Force
Maj. Remoshay Nelson

G

rowing up in Douglasville, Remoshay Nelson listened to
her stepfather's exotic stories of traveling the world with
the Navy.
" It was so different from anything I knew living in an apartment complex, " she says. " I remember climbing a tree where
I could watch trains going by and see planes flying [toward]
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and I wondered what it was like to be [other places than] where I lived. "
Nelson got the chance to discover the world when she
graduated from Douglas County High School in Douglasville
in 2007 and signed on with the Air Force ROTC program at
Howard University in Washington, D.C. After earning a speech
communication degree in 2011, Nelson headed off on her first
adventure: traveling the East Coast as a diversity recruiter for
the U.S. Air Force. After a year, she moved into public affairs and
was based in Dover, Del., where her duties involved working
with community leaders, members of the media and families
who went to the base to receive the bodies of fallen airmen.
" It's a very humbling mission and one I never thought I'd
ever be part of, " Nelson says. " It was an honor to be there for
people who make the ultimate sacrifice for our country. "
After two years in Delaware, Nelson spent 15 months in
Turkey as a public affairs chief-a job that was followed by
assignments in Germany and South Korea. She applied and was
accepted to lead the marketing, publicity and community relations efforts for the Thunderbirds, the U.S. Air Force demonstration squadron that performs aerobatic formations at air shows
around the world. Recently promoted to a major, Nelson is in
her second season with the team.
" People think it's just the pilots, but the Thunderbirds have
about 130 personnel doing 28 different jobs, " she says. " Only
eight are pilots, and only 12 of us are officers. Three of us are
females, including a female pilot. "
Dubbed the " ambassadors in blue, " the Thunderbirds are
the face of the Air Force.
" We travel around and connect with the public to let them
know what the Air Force is about, " she says. " For me, it's still
about the traveling. That was one of the reasons I applied for
this team. We're on the road at least 245 days of the year visiting
about 30 show sites. "
But one of the most exciting things she's done in her career,
Nelson says, was flying in the back seat of an F-15 Eagle.
" You only get to experience that a few times in your life, "
she says. " As far as cool things go, that's hard to beat. "
