ctober is National Co-op Month-a time to
celebrate cooperatives that serve all kinds
of industries worldwide. Cooperatives
are founded upon seven principles: open and
voluntary membership; democratic member
control; members' economic participation;
autonomy and independence; education,
training and information; cooperation among
cooperatives; and concern for the community.
Several books help tell the story of electric
cooperatives, which were created to bring electricity to underserved areas.
Here are a few books for a range of readers:
* " Josh and Sarah's Electric Adventure " produced by Lake Country Power in
Minnesota (2005); available in PDF format. For preschoolers to the early elementary
grades. Josh and Sarah learn about life before electricity came to the country and
tour a power plant to learn how electricity is generated for their community.
* " Wish Upon a Crawdad " by Curtis W. Condon (2022); available in hardcover,
paperback and e-book. For middle-grade readers. This is a story of adventure and
friendship, told by Ruby Mae Ryan, 12, who is about to get electricity for the first
time, thanks to the electric co-op formed by her family and other families in the
rural valley where she lives.
* " The Year the Lights Came On " by Terry Kay (1976, 2022); available in hardcover,
paperback and e-book. For middle-grade readers through adults. A coming-of-age
story revolves around the electrification of rural northeast Georgia shortly after the
end of World War II.
* " Power Plays " by Ted Case (2013); available in paperback. For high-school
readers through adults. This book tells the stories of 12 presidents and four electric
co-op leaders who built the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association into a
major force on the American political scene.
